Talk About Your Kids Much?
This past weekend I was supposed to go on my first “girls weekend” in three years. Instead, I was sick so lounged on the couch with children piled on top of me. But, I did pull up one of my old posts and reflected upon “The Rule”. How much do you talk to your friends about your kids?
My ninety-two-year-old grandmother has given birth to a lot of babies. She had babies in the 1930s, 40s, 50s, and 60s. She was collecting the baby bonus and old-age pension at the same time. Grandma is as wise as she is old, so when she talks, this humble creator of five babies drops everything and listens.
Homemade Sensory Fun

The kids are home, everyone’s outdoors, let’s have some good old-fashioned messy fun! Why messy fun? Of the five senses, the sense of touch is developmentally important. We regularly allow our kids to play with sand, and with water in the bath, but beyond wet and sandy, how many other sensations can they describe?
Mrs. Judgy McJudgerson at the Mall

That cute face is why I got into a fight at the mall. And yes, as his shirt indicates, he was actually “dipped in handsome sauce”.
I took my three youngest kids for lunch at the food court in the local mall the other day. My toddler had a meltdown and was doing the high-pitched scream. Yeah, you know the sound.
As I’m trying to manage my stressful moment, an elderly woman looked over at us and shook her head in disgust.
The Stork Missed My House
Its early one crisp spring morning, they are proudly riding their tricycles around the court, their cheeks rosy from the chill in the air. The sunlight dances across the roof tops and a large robin proudly sings as she roost on the peak of a nearby home. Seeing this, I smile to myself as I remember not feeling the simple joy found in early spring and as those seasons passed into years my moments of joy seeming to be less and less frequent.
WeeHands in the Garden
In my classes and parent presentations I talk a lot of about narrating your children’s day and labeling sensory experiences. Now if playing in the garden isn’t a sensory experience I don’t know what is! Remember though that for your crawling baby or walking toddler, their gardening goals may be different than yours!
Making it Look Easy
Julie Cole – People often tell me I make things look easy. I think the reason I make things look easy is because they often are. A perfect example is the neighbourhood Easter egg hunt I recently organized. Please note that when I say “organized”, I am using the term very loosely. I sent out an e-mail to everyone on the neighbourhood e-mail list. It was the same e-mail I sent out last year. So I managed to get some cred and kudos for doing pretty much nothing.
You spoke, and thankfully, I listened.
To all of you who commented with moving advice on my blog post over at www.thebabymachine.com – if I could reach through this computer screen and give you a big squeezy hug, I would. I owe you my sanity. What those comments confirmed was that if you want the very best advice – go straight to the mamas. My Own Baby Signing Story
Sara Bingham – Like many parents who sign with their baby, my initial motivation for teaching my son American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary was to give him a way to express his wants and needs before he was able to speak. Joshua started signing at 9 months of age, and by the time he was 18 months old, he could use at least 80 words, a combination of spoken words and signs.
The Old Hag with the Babe
I felt young when I had my first baby. I was in my late-twenties but had always imagined I wouldn't get started until I was in my thirties. You see, I just had too much to do and didn't need a baby slowing me down. Turns out, sometimes they don't slow you down but speed you up. Regardless, as time passed and the number of babies increased, so did the number of candles on my birthday cake. Last week I blew out 38 of the damn things.
Sleep Matters
You probably don’t need a sleep consultant to tell you how important a good night’s rest is. Just skip a few hours of the good stuff and your brain-turned-mush will do a fine job reprimanding you for not giving your body the sleep it deserves.
